The Food Technology Study Program lecturers at Institut Teknologi Sumatera (ITERA) collaborated with the Visual Communication Design Study Program at ITERA and carried out community service (PkM) at UKM Pempek Unyil, Way Halim, Bandar Lampung. The team consisting of Hesti Ayuningtyas Pangastuti, Lasuardi Permana, Amalia Wahyuningtyas, and Arif Budiman, led by Dina Fithriyani, provided training on Good Food Production for Household Industry (CPPB-IRT) and also an effort to improve UKM branding. This PkM was carried out with support from the Community Service Grant of Institut Teknologi Sumatera (ITERA) in 2021 from LPPM ITERA.
UKM UKM Pempek Unyil is located at Jl. Gn. Rajabasa Raya, Way Halim, Bandar Lampung. This UKM has 7 branches spread across Bandar Lampung. With its management and production running separately, UKM Pempek Unyil has several obstacles, including a very long production process, not yet having an S-PIRT, and needing improvement to its packaging in the form of increased branding using packaging labels.
Furthermore, in this activity, the Food Technology lecturers at ITERA also tried to apply the appropriate technology in the form of a mixing machine with the aim of optimizing pempek processing time. Assisted by three Food Technology ITERA students, namely Annida, Humaira and Oksifa, the fulfillment evaluation of the CPPB-IRT elements was carried out by means of direct visits and interviews. From the evaluation results obtained, the lecturers provided an initial recommendation for product quality improvement which was followed by CPPB-IRT assistance.
In addition to paying attention to food efficiency and safety aspects, the lecturers contributed by rebranding UKM Pempek Unyil’s product by creating packaging design and logo that had been agreed upon. The business labeling aims to build a strong brand for UKM Pempek Unyil so that it becomes increasingly known to the wider community.
