On Tuesday, 06 December 2022, the Study Program of Food Technology – Institut Teknologi Sumatera (PSTP-ITERA) conducted a visit to PT BMI Tanjung Bintang at Jl. This activity was part of the Sanitation and Waste Management course which discussed the importance of applying sanitation and hygiene in industry, environment, and personal, as well as waste management so as not to damage the environment. PT BMI Tanjung Bintang welcomed the visit from PSTP-ITERA and committed to continue supporting education and human resource development in the field of food technology.

PT BMI Tanjung Bintang is one of the industries that are committed to providing high-quality seafood. With around 90% of its products exported to the United States and 10% of which is for orders from Japan and Europe, this company has a very large role in the international market.

During the industry visit, lecturers and students from PSTP-ITERA were allowed to visit the production line of PT BMI Tanjung Bintang and to learn about the sanitation hygiene concept applied by the company. They were also allowed to know the procedures and process of liquid waste treatment taken from leftover water use during the production process, so that the water is safe to return to the environment.

This industry visit is a way to combine material that has been obtained in the course and practicum with the real conditions in the industry. During the visit, lecturers and students were guided by Ibu Friska (for the production line part) and Bapak Hengki for the industrial waste processing system. Through this visit, students can learn directly about the implementation of sanitation and waste management in the food industry, as well as gain useful experience for their future.
