Guest Lecture on Introduction to UV/UV-VIS Spectrophotometry Methods from PT. Ditex Jaya as an Effort to Improve Student Competence

The Food Technology study program carried out a lecture development innovation through a guest lecture on Friday, 13 May 2022. The guest lecture was held with the theme “Introduction to UV/UV-VIS Spectrophotometry Methods”, conducted online and mandatory for students of the food analysis course. The guest lecture was attended by 127 students, both those taking the food analysis course and final-year students, to support student research.

This course discusses the process of analyzing food materials using various testing methods. The analysis process, for both macromolecules and micromolecules, ranges from simple methods to the use of instruments such as UV/UV-VIS, GC, HPLC, IR, and so on. Therefore, this guest lecture focused on the UV/UV-VIS spectrophotometry method, with speaker Mr. Yanwar Pratama Putra, a Sales Engineer from PT. Ditex Jaya.

This guest lecture covered the principles of spectrophotometry methods through to the technical aspects and components of spectrophotometer instruments. There are various types of spectroscopy, namely Ultaviolet-Visible (UV-VIS) Spectrophotometry, Infrared Spectrophotometry, Mass Spectrophotometry, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Atomic absorption/emission/ fluorescence Spectrometry, X-ray Spectrometry. The material also explained several technical matters when testing using Ultaviolet-Visible (UV-VIS) Spectrophotometry.

Technical matters during testing became an interesting topic in the discussion. Students were very enthusiastic in sharing several obstacles and experiences they encountered during practicums and research in the laboratory. Mr. Yanwan Pratama Putra explained in great detail and technically each question raised by the students. This met the intended expectation that students gain additional knowledge from a technician’s point of view, thereby complementing students’ abilities in testing with the spectrophotometry method.
