ITERA Food Technology Holds Laboratory Training to Prepare Students for Final Project Research

The ITERA Food Technology Study Program conducted training on OHS (Occupational Health and Safety), GLP (Good Laboratory Practices) and a Lab Tour in the laboratories under the ITERA Food Technology Study Program. The activity was held over two days: OHS training on 24 September 2022, and GLP training and the lab tour on 25 September 2022. The training was conducted to prepare the research to be carried out by final-year students, especially users of the ITERA Food Technology laboratories.

The training began with remarks from the head of the committee, who is also the coordinator of the ITERA Food Technology laboratories, Isnaini Rahmadi. The next session was led by the speaker, Ibnu Riyanto, an OHS consultant from Ibeza Consulting, online via zoom meeting. Mr. Ibnu presented the key points that must be observed when working in a laboratory and how to control them.

“A laboratory is one of the places with many risks of workplace accidents, so awareness of safety when working in a laboratory is important to know. Each laboratory also has different risks, and users must know in detail the hazards and how to handle them,” explained Mr. Ibnu.

The event continued with GLP training conducted in person on Sunday, 25 September 2022 at the GKU ITERA Hall. The session was delivered by speakers from the ITERA Food Technology lecturer team. “Good Laboratory Practices are the regulations and guidelines for conducting laboratory work properly so that the management and systems within it are guaranteed in quality, validity and integrity, so that the research conducted can be verified and traced well. GLP is carried out to ensure that what is reported from laboratory activities matches what was actually carried out and also to avoid unwanted workplace accidents,” said Yosi Syafitri, one of the speakers.

After the presentation of the material and the discussion session were completed, the lab tour was held at the Food Chemistry and Nutrition Laboratory located on the 4th floor of GLT 2. In this session, several laboratory instruments were presented, along with simple laboratory work practices such as pipetting with a measuring pipette, weighing with an analytical balance, making cotton plugs, handling Petri dishes, using a micropipette, and so on. This series of activities is expected to give final-year students an overview of how to work properly in a laboratory so that they are better prepared to conduct research, especially research that uses laboratories.
