ITERA Food Technology Conducts a Virtual Industrial Visit to Great Giant Food

The Food Technology Study Program of Sumatra Institute of Technology (ITERA) held a virtual industrial visit to Great Giant Food (GGF) on Thursday (22/4/2021). The activity was attended by 92 students of the 2019 cohort, lab assistants, and the lecturers teaching the postharvest technology course. The virtual industrial visit was held as part of implementing the key performance indicators (IKU) of state universities. The virtual industrial visit gave students the opportunity to learn the application of postharvest technology in industry; in addition, industry practitioners could deliver lectures to students and provide case studies for students to solve.

The activity was welcomed directly by Mr. Indra Ardiyanto, corporate communication manager. He was very pleased with the visit from students of the Itera food technology study program. “Industrial visits are usually carried out by visiting the factory; a virtual visit like today is a solution for students to still gain learning from the postharvest industry at GGF during the current COVID-19 pandemic.” The Itera food technology study program thanks GGF for the opportunity to receive a virtual visit. “This industrial visit to GGF is expected to be valuable learning for students to understand postharvest processes from the experts. GGF has produced quality postharvest products that have been exported abroad,” said Amalia Wahyuningtyas, S.Si., M.Sc, secretary of the Itera food technology study program.

GGF is a large company that unites many business entities, from fresh to canned fruit, livestock to fresh juices and healthy smoothies. The majority of agricultural and food products are produced on 34,000 hectares of land located in Lampung, South Sumatra, and East Java. Quality control is the top priority at GGF. In addition, the company, well known for its processed pineapple products, applies an integrated agricultural value chain that includes a 200-hectare farming model, Wastewater Treatment, an innovation center, and laboratories. The hope of the Itera Food Technology study program is that this cooperation can continue in the future, such as through practical course (KP) activities, internships, and research as part of implementing the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program.
