Thai KMITL Student Learns Integrated Waste Management and Biodiversity at ITERA

South Lampung, May 6, 2026 — Students from King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) followed a series of summer course activities together with Study Program Food Technology Institut Teknologi Sumatera (ITERA) through an educational visit to IWACI ITERA and Kebun Raya ITERA.

This activity aims to introduce the concept of environmental sustainability, integrated waste management, and plant conservation to international participants. The visit was guided by Food Technology Lecturers at Institut Teknologi Sumatera (ITERA), namely Zada Agna Talitha and Yosi Syafitri.

At IWACI ITERA, participants received an explanation regarding the integrated waste management system implemented in the campus environment. The waste produced is grouped into three categories, namely food waste, organic waste, and inorganic waste. Food waste is utilized as feed for Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae or maggot, which is subsequently processed into pellets for fish feed.

Meanwhile, inorganic waste is sorted based on its economic value. Some waste that still has economic value will be recycled or sold again, whereas some other types of waste are processed through pyrolysis. For organic waste, the processing is carried out to become liquid organic fertilizer (POC). In addition, livestock waste in the form of cattle and goat feces is also utilized as a raw material for biogas production.

After the visit to IWACI, participants continued the activity at Kebun Raya ITERA by visiting the Nepenthes garden and the orchid garden. At that opportunity, participants were introduced to various types of native Indonesian plants as well as conservation and development efforts for the plant collection at Kebun Raya ITERA.

Through this activity, international students are expected to understand the application of circular economy and sustainability concepts in waste management and to know Indonesia’s biodiversity potential, especially in the ITERA environment.
