Owner of El's Coffee Shares Challenges of the Coffee Business

The ITERA Food Technology Study Program held a Studium Generale with the theme “Opportunities and Challenges of the Coffee Business in Indonesia” on Tuesday (29/9). The Studium Generale was conducted online via ZOOM and YouTube Live

The speaker was Elkana Arlen Riswan, Founder of EL’S COFFEE and Kopi Ketje. At the event, Elkana recounted and shared his experiences regarding the opportunities and challenges he has encountered during 6 years in the coffee business. According to Elkana, the opportunity in the coffee business is that it is easy to follow trends in business concepts favored by the public. In addition, Lampung is the largest robusta coffee-producing region in Indonesia, so raw materials are very easy to obtain.

The event, attended by 206 participants, received extraordinary enthusiasm from the participants. Participants had the opportunity to ask questions and discuss directly how to start and sustain a business, especially a culinary business. Elkana also shared 3 keys to success in order to “survive” in business, namely innovation, location, and collaboration.

Besides opportunities, Elkana also described the challenges of the coffee business. According to Elkana, the challenge in the coffee business is that not everyone can consume coffee, so he must be more flexible in composing the menu at his cafe. “Because not everyone likes coffee, I do not only sell coffee menus, but also other items such as milk-based drinks, chocolate, tea, as well as other beverage and food innovations,” he said.

The theme of this Studium Generale was created to foster the spirit of ITERA Students in building businesses, especially food businesses. Amid ever-narrowing job opportunities, students are expected to create their own employment after graduating. (DTM)
